Scott Bader produces a paraffin wax solution called Crystic Solution MW that is added to unsaturated polyester resins, such as gelcoats, to create a smooth, tack-free surface during curing. The wax migrates to the surface, forming a protective layer that prevents air inhibition, making it ideal for external applications like boat hulls, flat roofs, and other fibreglass laminates that need to be fully cured and durable.
How it works
- Paraffin wax is the key ingredient. When mixed into a resin, it rises to the surface as the resin cures.
- The wax forms a thin, protective layer that blocks air from interfering with the surface cure of the resin.
- This process prevents the surface from remaining tacky, allowing for a properly hardened and durable finish.

How to use
- Add Crystic Solution MW to the unsaturated polyester resin at a rate of 1% to 2% by weight.
- Stir the solution thoroughly until it is fully incorporated.
- Apply the resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Once cured, the surface can be sanded and polished to achieve a high-gloss finish.
